Part of the ABC Islands, Curacao is one of the most underrated destinations in the Caribbean. Inhabited by the Arawaks then, then later by the Spanish. Curacao has struggled to maintain its independence. Soon after gaining its independence from Spain, losing its protection. The Netherlands invaded the island to take over control. Along with, Bonaire, St. Martin, St Eustatius, and Saba (known as the Netherlands Antilles), Curacao is one of the few islands in the Caribbean that belong to the European Union because of this. Aruba was also part of the NA but left the group in the 1980s.
Curacao’s national language is Papiamento. Because of its complicated history, its national language is a blend of Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch. It comes as no surprise since these were the primary groups that at one point or another, invaded and influenced their culture. Curacao also has well over 35 beaches. Something unheard of on an island of its size (you can drive round trip, end to end, in under 2 hours). What draws most people to Curacao has to be Willemstad which is also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Filled with color, history, art, and during peak season a fun nightlife, Curacao is definitely an Island to experience at least once in your lifetime.
