THE HISTORY OF HO CHI MINH CITY

Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, stands as a testament to the unwavering resilience and indomitable strength of the Vietnamese people. From its modest origins as a small fishing village named Prey Nokor, it was part of the Khmer Empire before being annexed by the Vietnamese in the 17th century. The city’s journey as a trading port under Vietnamese control and its subsequent rise in importance during the French colonial period, starting in the mid-19th century, is a narrative of endurance and growth that commands respect.

Under French rule, Saigon was transformed into a bustling city, becoming the capital of French Cochinchina and later the capital of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) after the country was divided in 1954. Saigon was a focal point during the Vietnam War and fell to North Vietnamese forces on April 30, 1975, marking the end of the war. Following the reunification of Vietnam, Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in honor of the communist revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh.

Today, the city is the economic and cultural hub of Vietnam, blending historical architecture with modern skyscrapers, reflecting its complex and dynamic history.

THINGS TO DO IN HO CHI MINH CITY

Ho Chi Minh City can be a whirlwind of activity, sometimes overwhelming for visitors. Navigating the streets, especially when crossing, can be a real challenge. However, we found that using taxis, particularly through the Grab app, was a much more stress-free and affordable option for getting around. The Grab app is a ride-hailing platform that allows you to book a taxi or a motorbike taxi (known as GrabBike) with just a few taps on your smartphone. It’s a must-have tool, offering not just convenience but also pocket-friendly prices. Additionally, it’s worth noting that the city’s public transportation system, including buses and the metro, is efficient and affordable, making it an excellent option for those looking to explore the city on a budget.

While Ho Chi Minh City might not have been our top pick during our 10-day Vietnam trip, we still managed to find ways to enjoy our time there. It also served as a convenient base for exploring the Cu Chi Tunnels, a vast network of underground tunnels used by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War, and the Mekong Delta, a region known for its lush landscapes, floating markets, and traditional villages. These two attractions are not just places to visit, but they offer unique and profound insights into Vietnam’s rich history and vibrant culture, sparking curiosity and interest.

Take A Day Trip To Cu Chi Tunnels And Mekong Delta

The easiest way to explore these two destinations is with an organized tour. The Cu Chi Tunnels are 1 hour away by car from Ho Chi Minh City. These intricate tunnels, constructed by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War, served as a crucial part of the underground network used for living quarters, storage, and military strategies. Exploring the tunnels offers a firsthand look at the resilience and resourcefulness of the Vietnamese people during the conflict. Visitors can crawl through the narrow passages, discover hidden trapdoors, and gain insights into the challenges faced by those who lived underground.

After the very insightful visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels and a lunch break included in the package, you will head to the Mekong Delta. It will take about 2 hours to reach your destination by car. Once there, you will take a boat tour and taste local tropical fruits and honey tea while listening to live “Don Ca Tai Tu,” a traditional folk music genre. Finally, you will experience a coconut candy workshop to learn how they produce their staple treat (you can also buy the freshly made candy if you would like).
