Explore the Historic French Quarter

Jackson Square, New Orleans

No trip to New Orleans is complete without wandering through the lively streets of the French Quarter! It will most likely be one of your first activities in the Big Easy. This iconic neighborhood, also known as “Vieux Carré,” is the cultural and historical center of the city. When you stroll through its lively streets, you will feel like you are entering another era, where every corner is filled with a story waiting to be discovered. Each structure tells a tale of New Orleans’ diverse cultural influences, blending French, Spanish, and Caribbean aesthetics into a style that’s uniquely its own.

Be sure to spend time in Jackson Square, the heart of the French Quarter and a must-see destination. This picturesque plaza, framed by the majestic St. Louis Cathedral and bordered by historic buildings like the Pontalba Apartments, is alive with energy. Street performers, artists, and musicians gather here daily.

For shoppers and art enthusiasts, Royal Street is full of unique treasures. This charming stretch is lined with boutique shops, antique stores, and art galleries, each offering one-of-a-kind items you won’t find anywhere else (vintage jewelry and rare collectibles to contemporary art and handmade crafts).

Discover the Mystique of Voodoo, Ghosts, And Hunted Places

Muriel's Jackson Square ghost-things to do in New Orleans

Many things make me adore New Orleans! Its deep roots in voodoo and ghost stories are at the top of my list, as they add a layer of mystique and uniqueness to the experience. I suggest dedicating some time to discovering this world, as it will also help you better understand the city’s fascinating history and all its different cultural influences.

Learn About Voodoo Culture

Voodoo culture in New Orleans

Voodoo is a serious deal in New Orleans, and it is something that needs to be explored and learned with respect for its beliefs. I highly recommend checking out one or more voodoo shops, starting with Voodoo Authentica (my favorite!), which is known for its handmade local and imported voodoo dolls and knowledgeable staff. Other notable shops include Marie Laveau’s House of Voodoo (the owner and staff here have a reputation for being unfriendly and rude sometimes, but you can still find some nice merchandise at reasonable prices) and Reverend Zombie’s House Of Voodoo. You can also visit the tiny but very interesting Voodoo Museum that showcases artifacts, altars, and historical insights into how this religion shaped New Orleans culture. The museum also offers guided tours of the city, which must be booked 24 hours in advance.

Ghost Tours and Haunted Bars

You can also stop by two of New Orleans’s most renowned haunted bars for a drink (or two).

Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar: One of the oldest buildings in the French Quarter, is said to be frequented by the ghost of its original owner. The bar’s dimly lit, historic interior only adds to its haunting charm.

Muriel’s: Another bar we highly recommend checking out is the one inside Muriel’s Restaurant. Besides the fascinating history of its resident ghost, the place is gorgeous and worth a visit, even to take a few pictures and enjoy a cocktail.
