Appleton Estate: The Ultimate Jamaican Rum Tour

Appleton Estate, Jamaica

We’ve been to Jamaica several times, but for the first few trips, especially during COVID, we mostly stayed in Negril. Venturing out wasn’t really an option then, but on our most recent visit, we decided to change that and take a trip to the Appleton Estate.

Planning a trip to Jamaica? Whether you’re looking for insider tips, detailed itineraries, or unique experiences, here are a few other articles that might help you make the most of your visit:

How To Get To The Appleton Estate

How to get to Appleton Estate

Located in Jamaica’s beautiful countryside, Appleton Estate is about a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Negril. We decided to drive ourselves because we had already rented a car. Alternatively, you can hire a private driver or join a group tour. The cost is considerably higher but the Jamaican run tour is paired with a visit to the popular YS Falls.

For most of the drive, everything was fine. The roads were good, and the scenery was beautiful. But then, our GPS suddenly directed us onto a smaller road that led straight up the mountains. On the map, it looked like a shortcut and the only way to the Appleton Rum Estate, but in reality, it was an incredibly rough, winding, and rocky road that made the journey longer and way more stressful than it needed to be. I must admit, that the scenery was stunning though but only an experienced driver like Dwayne could make it sound and safe up those mountains!

Here’s our advice: Stay on the main road. At some point, your GPS will probably try to get you to turn left onto a smaller road, don’t do it. Just keep going straight. It may seem like the longer route, but trust us: it’s actually faster and much easier to drive.

If you don’t drive up into the mountains and you’re comfortable driving on the left side of the road (with the driver’s seat on the right side of the car), you’ll have no problems. The main roads are generally well-maintained and safe.

Arriving At The Appleton Estate

Once we finally arrived, the hassle of the drive was quickly forgotten. Reservations are only recommended for groups of 15 people or more. Tickets cost $39 USD per person and can be purchased upon arrival or online through Viator.com. They include a welcome cocktail made with Appleton rum and a rum tasting at the end of the tour.

The tour itself is a great experience. You get to walk through the distillery in a small group, see the aging barrels, and learn about the rum-making process. The tasting at the end allows you to sample some of their best rums, and learn more about their characteristics.

The Gift Shop: Take Home a Taste of Jamaica

Before leaving, you can stop by the Appleton Estate gift shop. They offer the full range of Appleton Estate Jamaica rums, including their signature blends and premium aged selections. If you’re lucky, you might even find limited edition rums, which are only available at the estate. It’s the perfect place to grab a bottle (or two) to bring home as a souvenir or gift for a rum lover.

A Great Meal Before Heading Back

After the tour, we stopped at the on-site restaurant, which serves affordable and good Jamaican food. It was the perfect way to refuel before the drive back.

The Appleton Estate Rum Experience is open to the public Tuesday to Saturday 9:00 am-3:30 pm. For more information visit the Appleton Estate official website

Final Thoughts

Despite the unexpected detour, visiting Appleton Rum Estate was well worth it. Whether you’re a rum lover or just looking to explore beyond Jamaica’s beaches, this is a fantastic way to experience a different side of Jamaica.

If you’re looking for one of the best things to do in Jamaica, an Appleton Estate tour and Jamaican rum tasting should definitely be on your list. The journey from Negril to Appleton Estate offers a scenic drive, and once you arrive, you’ll be in for an unforgettable experience.

Note: While Appleton Estate is now a celebrated destination, it’s important to acknowledge that its origins are tied to Jamaica’s colonial past and the forced labor of enslaved Africans. Today, the tour honors this history while celebrating the resilience and craftsmanship that shaped Jamaican rum.
